Unforgettable Social Issues

Unforgettable Social IssuesDo you know that almost 90% of Americans know what obesity is but not many actually know that one of the biggest and most overlooked social issues is child abuse? In fact, studies have shown that three-quarters of the people surveyed were unaware of this. With this kind of disregard for something as serious as child abuse, the only conclusion that one can draw is that America is becoming a lot more shallow than it used to be. The extent of the problem is a national embarrassment and it should be addressed immediately. In order to address this problem properly, we need to first understand what the problem is. Child abuse is when a child or youth is physically, mentally, emotionally, sexually, verbally, psychologically, and/or physically abused by someone else. A child can be sexually abused on any day of the week. It does not matter if the child is young or old, the level of abuse that he/she has been exposed to will determine how severe the abuse is.We must remember that child abuse is very common because it is a problem that happens in homes across the country. You probably have a family member or loved one that is being abused regularly. Child abuse takes place every day in different forms and it is often more difficult to spot because it is often a hidden issue. It may not even be a problem that anyone wants to address at all. People often blame themselves for being victimized but the fact is that the child may have been mistreated for no reason. The statistics that say that one in five American children are being abused are shocking. But as disturbing as this statistic is, we must remember that statistics are just statistics. What really matters is whether the problem was being ignored, dealt with, or perhaps even dealt with too late to be of any help.Statistics have shown that over 60 million Americans have been victims of child abuse. Many of these statistics were overlooked and over the last ten years, reports of child abuse have risen dramatically. When you consider that there are about thirty million children in this country, then there are approximately five million cases of child abuse. Every year, there are approximately two million reported cases of child abuse in the United States alone. There are several factors that affect the number of reported child abuse cases in a country. The biggest factor is education levels of the people living in a particular area. If a community has a high level of education and there are a large number of adults in the community, the chances of reporting a child abuse case is higher.Another factor that affects the reporting of childhood incidents is the type of abuse suffered by the child. The types of child abuse that a victim can report can range from physical, verbal, sexual, emotional, to psychological. If there is any evidence of child abuse, then it is imperative that the person doing the investigating needs to make sure that they give it to the proper authorities.C hild abuse can be prevented. The best way to prevent child abuse is to simply talk to your children about it, teach them about respecting others, and, of course, be there to protect them from anything that may happen to them.
